And so I go into the woods. As I go in under the trees, dependably, almost at once, and by nothing I do, things fall into place … my mind loses its urging, senses its nature, and is free.- W. Berry

Fire your consultants. No one wants to hear this pablum right now.

I totally get it. Imagine having to look into the eyes of your innocent, joyful 10-year-old the morning after Trump was reelected. It ain’t easy.

That is weird. I completely understand not having kids. And I will admit that the bad news in the world used to never affect me and now it breaks my heart. You become extremely vulnerable once you have to care about the future.

I’m happy for you. They’re definitely not for everyone and a lot of people have them who shouldn’t. And I appreciate your patience with me mouthing off in your mentions. If my son ends up cursing me for bringing him into this world, I promise to get back to you and admit you were right.

Anyway, I’ll stop being annoying but I don’t recommend saying you’re glad you don’t have kids to your friends and family with kids. Even if you actually believe it, which seeing as how you’re still alive, I highly doubt. It won’t get you many invites to parties. It’s a pretty despicable comment.

Not a fan of their art, which is subjective. But do you think members of the White Rose regretted being born even as they were lead to the firing line?

In Junger’s book “Tribe” he shows how people were happier under suffering, the London Blitz and the San Francisco earthquake in his examples, than in peace and prosperity. They longed to go back to when every day had meaning and could be the last.

Do you think people living in fascist Spain or Portugal or Argentina regretted being born? I’ve read their books and listened to their music. They were loving, fucking, dancing, drinking, having children. All under severe repression.

And usually the people who say they can’t imagine having kids have a pretty great life, they just don’t like what they see staring at their phones all day. But I agree with them. Having children at any point in time takes courage and if you don’t have that, don’t have kids. Best for everyone.

Exactly my point. Being human means finding meaning and joy and love in a perpetually fallen world. We have the entire history of art to tell us that life is worth living even when it’s hard and unfair and even horrible. Any work of art you love was created in a time of strife and struggle.

Thank you for your reporting. Too early in the year to talk Pulitzer Prize?

I’m curious to know the time in history when things were great and it was ok to have kids.

The 6 -7 thing was annoying but it’s over.

And don’t even get me started on Homer. It’s just revenge and grief all the way down.
January 4, 2026 at 3:10 AM
After Shakespeare’s tales of revenge and grief, is it time he got some new ideas?
January 4, 2026 at 3:09 AM
We have two insane death traps, 70 and 25, that kill people every day and not a single politician ever even talks about it. Solutions, unlike a lot of problems, are pretty easy, but not a word.

Of course, the Senate and House can easily override a presidential veto for a bill that passed unanimously. Who will CO GOP side with? Their own voters or the old man?

In fact, Layden continued, all the problems of the world could be solved with one person in charge of everything. A “one-world government” if you will, with an all-powerful God-King to rule over it. It’s just common sense, Layden said.
