Here are the sights & sounds of Chile’s Futaleufú River for my new friends on #Bluesky #blueskysocial
Good morning! It’s the old “dusk reflecting on the pond” trick, from Chilean Patagonia. Wishing all of our American friends a relaxing “final weekend before you fight with all your relatives at Thanksgiving.”

Sometimes, when I am writing and fully present, a miracle happens. If you want to call that God, that is ok. Then my cursed mind, greedy & ambitious, says, “That is really good! You should send it to the New Yorker.” The moment has now been defiled. It is time to go for a walk & listen to the river.

Good morning Bluesky friends. Just a reminder: while Patagonia is indeed one of the world’s most beautiful places, it is also one of the world’s wildest places. Extreme weather all over the region the past few days. We join in mourning the loss of 5 tourists who perished at Torres del Paine.

“Arroyo Partido” in autumn & winter. This mountain stream originates at Cerro Chapelco, a ski area in San Martin de los Andes, Argentina. The stream splits in 2 at a rocky outcrop. The branch on the left flows 200km, into Chile, and the Pacific Ocean. The right branch flows 1200 km to the Atlantic.

Freyja & Lukka. When our first Icelandics arrived in Chile they quarantined 15 days with the National Agronomy Service (SAG). The vets at SAG were enamored. “Are all Icelandics like puppies?” Kind of. The foals are, also, like school kids. Here they are waiting for me to finish my coffee & play.

I am pleased to report that Gilbert, who was brutally attacked by a stray dog 7 months ago, is totally healed, feeling great, and openly lobbying to be the cover model for our 2026 calendar. You deserve it buddy!

Good morning! Today’s timeline cleanse features the spring flowers in bloom along Chile’s famed Futaleufú River at Gelvez Bridge. The turquoise color of many Patagonian rivers is a phenomenon caused by glacial till.

Calm before the storm. The “Pasarela Santa Clara” is located between sections III & IV on Chile’s mighty Futaleufú. Section III is called “Terminator” and Section IV is called “Bridge to Bridge.” Together they combine to bring adrenaline junkies some of the most famed whitewater on earth.

I call this photo “What you talking ‘bout Willis?” Apparently Daniel & Bety’s geese, lower left corner in this photo, are Philadelphia Eagles fans. Llamas, alpacas & Icelandics are Green Bay Packers fans. Hopefully there will be peace in the valley on Tuesday.

The view from my bedroom window at 6:18 a.m. this morning. This is why I refuse to out blinds on this window. I enjoy being woken up by the sunrise.

Good morning. It was a good election day yesterday in the USA. That makes today a nice moment to take in the view from the bridge over Estero José, “Joe’s Creek,” just above the delta of this mountain stream at Yelcho Lake, Chilean Patagonia.

In 1999 my wife & I were newlyweds making our first visit from Valparaíso to Chile’s Carretera Austral. The route was unpaved. Our tiny Opel Corsa was overwhelmed. We made it only as far as Yelcho Lake, but the energy & presence of Patagonia left a deep mark. 26 years later we call this place home.
