this violence on my reddit feed 😭
This is for Lord of the Rings fans.

First of all, I respect Viggo Mortensen as an actor. He's great in Thirteen Lives, for instance. And he's clearly a dedicated, highly talented actor.

Second of all, it isn't easy to play the role of Aragorn. He's not very fully delineated in the book. He is very like Gandalf in some ways, but Gandalf gets a lot more dialogue and scenes - and humour!

Having said that, Viggo never made much of an impression on me as Aragorn in Lotr. There are excellent character portrayals in that film - Gandalf, Sam, and Gollum, in particular - but Viggo's just doesn't stand out. His Aragorn lacks charisma and emotion. It isn't easy to portray a character like Aragorn based on the books, because his predominant mood in the book is just 'grim'! However, while the 3 mentioned above did pull it off, Viggo just didn't.

I appear to be alone in this reaction, as everyone else in the world seems to love Viggo as Aragorn. But I just don't get what's so great about him. Not saying he's bad as Aragorn, or that I dislike him in the role, but he just doesn't blow me away the way he seems to for everyone else.

I LOVE THE RINGS OF POWER I LOVE
IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT THANK YOUUUU TEAM ANTI GEN AI YAS BABY SHOW GO KEEP MAKING MIDDLE-EARTH WITH REAL ARTISTS WE LOVE TO SEE IT 😘🥳🫶
Netflix recently made headlines after using AI for VFX in its sci-fi series The Eternaut. So, of course, I have to ask you about the creeping use of AI.

I appreciate both sides of [the debate]. But the way the landscape is currently, using AI feels like you’re using the work of other artists. It’s like when you use Google to search for an image; I can’t then say, “I made that.” The tools that I’ve seen so far don’t yet give the artist enough control to own the creative, and I think that’s what copyright people are saying, too. It’s amazing what they can do, but for our show, it’s all man-made.

Correction! Real friends show their friends all six extended films, Rings of Power, and then give them a ten hour talk on the Legendarium (especially Silm and Gondolin) because all Tolkien is good Tolkien and The Rings of Power is ✨ awesome ✨

You poor thing. Friends don’t let friends watch the rings of power. Who hurt you?

The two issues they face are not having the rights to The Silmarillion, only the appendices and LOTR, and having to time condense thousands of years so that they don’t have a whole new cast of characters every season other than the elves. And given those restrictions, I think they’re doing great!

This might be a hot take but asking a Tolkien fan's opinion on The Rings of Power should be a first-date question! You can learn like 75% of what you need to know about a person by the way they respond...

I'd bet money that 95% of those hating on TROP have never read a single book of the Legendarium themselves and do not even care about the films very much. They just love the controversy and jumped on the bandwagon of hate. They don't love Tolkien. They just like punching down.

I love the films so much, I truly do, but EL OH EL at the idea that they are remotely fucking canon and somehow better at honouring Tolkien than TROP.

'I won't accept anything but Peter Jackson!!!'

Ah yes, the maker of the Eyeball Lighthouse. Arwen's perplexing and underdeveloped storyline. The lack of Glorfindel and Fredegar. The character assassination of Isildur. Saruman's death in the films and no Shire Scouring. So canon.

The Sauron Lighthouse will forever bother me, I fear.

I'M SORRY BUT WHY IS THERE AN EYEBALL LIGHTHOUSE WHEN GOLLUM MENTIONS HIS FINGERS?! DO YOU SEE FINGERS ON THAT TOWER?! WHERE ARE THE FINGERS, PETER????

And don't even get me started on how (non-)canon the Peter Jackson films were. I love the LOTR movies but holy singing Ainur did they take lots of unnecessary liberties.
