After reading a fair bit of Finnegans wake I am catching on to his pun generating technique. I found myself dreaming “litigious…lettuce juice…let itch judge…le gidge tuss…delicious…light ridge truss”

Hot take. Definition of a scholar. One who individually takes a deep dive into something that used to be shared by many, commonly, at the most superficial level. Eg. Cuneiform. Time was, lots of people knew it. Lingua Franca. Now, like; three people.

In college I was quite the little Kantian. University of Chicago was, shall we say, rather a conservative institution philosophically. But Kant led me to Nietzsche, Heidegger, eventually the wider world.

What are reading right now? Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. Chapter 11, “Lessons” is pretty funny. Also trying to read about and works of Giordano Bruno. His greatest work is written in Latin and has never been translated to English.

Ha. Try this experiment. You know how you see Economist articles or New Yorker or Atlantic articles behind a paywall and you think “hmm. Maybe I should subscribe!” Buy one magazine. See if you ever read it. I checked out a recent Economist from the library and guess what. Not reading it.

What are you reading right now. Mysticism by Simon Critchley. Because my son commanded me to do so. I used to be much more into mysticism but abandoned that path years ago.

Incredible. "Paramount said its payment includes Mr. Trump’s legal fees and costs and that the money, minus the legal fees, will be paid to Mr. Trump’s future presidential library."
Paramount agreed to pay President Trump $16 million to settle his lawsuit over an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris that Trump claimed “60 Minutes” deceptively edited to interfere with the election. Read more: https://trib.al/xDMS1Fl

One of the greatest things Žižek can teach us is how to produce the lateral sibilant sound. This is crucial for those of us who want to distinguish Samech, ס Sin, ש and Shin ש when we read Biblical Hebrew.

Started to read the library copy of Stefan Zweig’s bio of Montaigne which compelled me to fish out my book of Montaigne I got years ago. And reminded me that I have it in French too. Honestly I could do nothing but read for like, two lifetimes.

Started watching Ken Burns civil war after visiting Gettysburg PA recently on the trip home from Poughkeepsie. Both visiting the battlefield and watching the show frequently brought me to tears. You want to watch me cry, have me tell you about Joshua Chamberlain.
