Ozturk’s attorney says the Turkish national, who was maintaining valid F-1 status, was detained by Dept. of Homeland Security agents as she was heading to meet with friends to break her Ramadan fast. Tufts University says they had no pre-knowledge of this incident and have no information about why the student was taken into custody. Ozturk is listed as a co-author of a March 2024 op-ed for ‘The Tufts Daily’ that called for the university to acknowledge genocide in Palestine and divest from companies with ties to Israel. Ozturk’s attorney has not been able to contact her client and Ozturk’s whereabouts are unknown. They attorney field a habeas petition requesting that Ozturk not be moved out of the District of MA which was granted by Judge Talwani Tuesday night. A rally is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Somerville.".
