John snorted at the anime girl flashing the peace sign on the kid’s tee. “I ain’t your bruh. Your body-pillow-humping ass will run out of steam long before I do.” “Up yours, Befuddled Bitch. Care to wager?” “I don’t know if you should be betting your basic income for being an unemployed loser. How will you pay your mom rent?” The kid made a rude gesture. “It’s your mom I pay—and it ain’t for rent. Scared? I’ll put a GEE on the line, pops.” John frowned. Did this kid really have a grand or was it just posturing? Lord knows I don’t—not to piss away gambling. “I’m not going to take a grand off you and then have to explain it later to the cops. One hundred. It ain’t the money, kid. It’s the score. Take it or walk off.” Green-hair waggled his holobanded wrist up and down in the universal you’re on gesture. He stepped onto the platform of his game. “I’m gonna embarrass you, bruh.” John removed his jacket and tossed it next to the platform, then stared the kid in the eye as he adjusted his hat and stepped onto his platform. I needed a workout anyway. “What’s embarrassing is that hair, sweetheart.” A crowd was slowly gathering as people overheard the wager and passed the word along. John muttered in irritation as hands lifted in practiced gestures, summoning holo-cap windows that shifted from faint blue to red as recording began. The red rectangles encircled the two players like an electrified grid, imprisoning them for the battle about to unfold. There were at least twenty—and more were winking into existence. This might have been a mistake, John thought.

“I can have the law here in two minutes,” said Jacob angrily. “I don’t know where you are, but I can also deploy our security drones, which will find your ass and blow it to shit!” “The locals have better things to do,” said Chase. “Besides, you won’t get your money that way. In fact, I’ve got an offer that will keep you visiting those ladies you love for quite a while.” “Bullshit. I think I’d rather just blow your ass up.” “Well, this is going great,” said Lina. “Who are you with?” asked Jacob. “What’s going on?” “Bottom line,” said Chase. “I want the run of the place, and probably a little help. You’ll keep the law and the home office out of it and report whatever we take as stolen when we leave. In return, I’ll transfer twenty thousand units—making us square.” Chase raised an eyebrow at Lina questioningly. She gave a tight nod. Jacob silently thought it over. “This better not be a trick.” “You don’t want twenty grand?” “Who’s with you?” “Twenty thousand units are with me,” said Chase. More silence. Then: “You pay on arrival.” “Good man. Two rovers are going to rumble into your warehouse—what side is the autolock on?” “West.” Chase nodded. “You let us in. I transfer the units. You give me what I need.” “Give me my drones back.” “I’ll give you a loop I recorded. Can’t have anyone knowing we’re here. Twenty G, Jacob. Think of all that silk and perfume.” “Two days, that’s it. West side.” The connection closed. Chase grinned. “Greed is so predictable.”
