I love a novel where the main character constantly has a headache, drinks too much coffee and/or alcohol, can’t sleep and and eats pills to try to deal with the above.

Hehe I got it working by inserting some very hacky code into tornado to detect when someone passes a unix socket like “/dev/fd/{int}” and just opening the fd directly.

Have opening an issue on the server repo to see if there’s any better way to make this work […]

You can see in this code [1] in tornado that it checks if the name for the socket starts with a null byte and if so it doesn’t try to delete it before binding to it.

So I naively tried using an abstract namespace socket, ie. Running `Jupyter lab —sock @jupyter` but first of all that @ doesn’t […]

So then I learned about that there’s this thing called the Linux Abstract Namespace for unix sockets. That’s where instead of the socket being somewhere on the filesystem like “”/var/run/jupyter.sock” instead it’s a string like “@jupyter” which I think you get by sending a string with a null […]

Jupyter lab can either listen on an ip:port combination, or a socket. I thought maybe there might be a way I could trick it by telling it to open “/dev/fd/3” as a socket but that doesn’t work because it really wants to be the one to create the socket. So you get an error where tornado (the […]

[Sexual assault]

Another page references a rape in Gibeah, which turns out to be a particularly unpleasant and graphic Old Testament story. What I find particularly interesting about this is that if you scroll down the page it seems like the story was added in order to justify the establishment […]

“With these they came, who […] had general names. Of Baalim and Ashtaroth, they those male, These feminine. For spirits when they please Can either sex assume, or both; so soft and uncompounded is their essence pure”
Miltons’s angels rejected the gender binary early.

Learning loads of stuff from this. For example, the word “Pandemonium” comes from Paradise lost. It’s the name the fallen angels give to the capital city they build in hell once they’ve pulled themselves together.

Anyway I shall henceforth refer to all devices in sleep mode as “keeping silent vigil”

I like that in French the middle state is measured not against the on state as it is in English but against the off state.

Anyway this lead me to learn that in 1494, Portugal and Spain agreed to divide all non-European land on earth equally between the two of them. Which … wow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tordesillas
