I think, seems to be a skill you haven’t developed quite yet. But keep telling Ukrainians about what they’re doing wrong, a great look!

So you think nukes are irrelevant in how nations have acted in this war? You’ve really not paid attention to much have you.
January 20, 2026 at 11:50 AM
Precisely, and there’s some great and valid political points being made here by the experts like @stephenkb.bsky.social and @samfr.bsky.social but Starmer etc clearly acknowledge the terrible situation we’re in defence wise but refuse to set out a plan to do anything about it beyond “stand with 🇺🇦”

Among Mike Johnson’s massive catalogue of horrible things done/said is that he said Lindsey Hoyle sounds Churchillian at points. I mean wtf.

We clearly could spend lots more on defence and have a far better position to deter both Trump and Putin. I am all for our politics stepping up and saying I’m sorry we can’t have a triple lock/endless SEND increases/NHS spending increases as well as being properly defended in a more dangerous world

They are absolutely short of munitions when their domestic arms industry could produce something like double what it currently does with sufficient funding. Manpower is a massive issue for them but one we can’t directly fix.

It is, but still deeply disheartening to hear Starmer and other Euro leaders say in domestic focussed pieces (like Starmer this week) that peace is super close. To me it just leaves us complacent and clearly not messaging to Euro citizens we have to prepare for actual war

Massive congratulations to you all! The best Christmas present

Stoking the complacency that has been preventing Europe from stepping up to counter russia properly. A real dereliction of 🇬🇧 leadership

But critics argue that Ireland, awash with cash from a corporation tax bonanza paid by global firms with big operations in the country, is using its neutral status to duck its 21st-century responsibilities.

Finland provides the blueprint in so many ways. Even if Europe just upped its manpower levels in its forces the signal would be clear to russia that we will have a strong response ready.

As the cost of article 5 being shown to be merely a piece of paper will make spending 3.5% by 2035 (a total joke when russia will be able to rebuild its military force in under 2 years should the war in Ukraine halt) seem trivial.

Great article & totally agree with the fundamentals. But what frustrates me so much is this is part of the wider lack of honesty in the discourse. We are entirely unprepared militarily to fulfil our NATO obligations should russia attempt an incursion into say Estonia. We have to spend now to prepare

There’s nothing yucky about being clear you want your country to belong in the democratic and free European system, not the autocratic murderous russian mir. She’s not got a thing in common with Trump, quite obviously.
