I love Pynchon btw it pains me to have to say anything negative. In fact, the very first piece I had published online was a celebration of the great man:

(Please ignore the crappy subeditor-imposed title, and the cringey construction "Think Henry Miller ...")

Cast aside synthetic substitutes, junk food for the soul, and take a bite of the pungent, organic mushroom offered up by the man from Oyster Bay, Thomas Pynchon.

I don't know if this is well known, but he told me that at one time he'd house-shared with a woman who was corresponding with someone who claimed to be Pynchon, and eventually visited, and as far as Groening knew, was TP. That's how I remember the story. Which makes 2 people I've met who've met TP.

Footnote: in September 1989 I interviewed Matt Groening in his office on the Fox lot. He had just seen the first episode of the Simpsons back from the animators and was in deep despair because it was awful, so we didn't talk about the Simpsons. Mostly we discussed Life in Hell, and Thomas Pynchon.

Alright, let's do it. Here's a little prospective reader's guide to every Thomas Pynchon novel. We'll take them in order of publication. This might be a long thread. Buckle up! 1/x

He comenzado a leer El Arcoiris de la Gravedad y debo decir que es bastante mas lisérgico que lo pintan

Y no es poco decir

One of my favorite quotes about him comes from Timothy Leary who said that Gibson offered the New Testament of cyberpunk with Neuromancer and Pynchon the Old Testament with Gravity's Rainbow.

If Pynchon wins the Nobel Prize for Literature, presumably his acceptance speech will be sent to Stockholm using a clandestine postal service then read out by a small child claiming to be the last living descendent of Werner von Braun

If I had a nickel for every movie based on a Thomas Pynchon novel, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't many, but it is - quite seriously - more than you'd think

Yo espero que cuando Pynchon se muera nadie informe. Que pasen los años y un día pensemos en cuándo sacará nueva novela y entonces pensemos también "pero este cabrón cómo va a tener 115 años?"

Ese es mi extraño deseo

Pynchon on "Warlock":
"For we are a nation that can, many of us, toss with all aplomb our candy wrapper into the Grand Canyon itself, snap a color shot and drive away; and we need voices like Oakley Hall’s to remind us how far that piece of paper, still fluttering brightly behind us, has to fall." 💘

As any Elizabethan could tell you if they all weren’t dead, melancholy is a far richer and more complex ailment than simple depression.
