@ElenLeFoll it's an interesting thought (to me) - nobody likes being desk rejected, but also nobody likes reviewing a paper which is obviously inappropriate. I wonder how systematic different journals/publishers are about managing this trade off? Don't know!

@ElenLeFoll on the first question, it sounds like they are trying to check if you think you did waste your time. If lots of people answered NO then they would get a signal that they are sending too much stuff out to review, and should desk reject more. Sound plausible?

I've just discovered that my email had a second, hidden, way of categorising messages as spam, and a folder of ~2500 messages which are 50% real spam and 50% genuine emails.

Amazing that I didn't notice missing so many emails

Also, if I never replied, that may be why

Also, how far back […]

If nothing else, this post illustrates something about #dataviz. Compare/contrast the poll results as originally presented and redraw as a graph

@samulireijula.net sadly my finnish is non existent. I was offered the option in my app to get a translation, and assumed you'd have something worth hearing so i clicked it ;-)

@samulireijula.net yes! You can view "plausibility generation" as a feature, not a bug (as long as you appropriately adjust your expectations that the model does plausibility, not accuracy)

Experiment Design Checklist

Atal Gawande’s The Checklist Manifesto is a compelling account of how the simple checklist can scaffold expertise and teamwork in complex domains. Good checklists, he says, nudge our memories, prompting us to do what we already know we should do, but risk missing.

Good checklists are also short. 5-9 “killer” items, says Gawande.

So, I got to thinking, what would be on my checklist for experiment design? Additional suggestions welcome, by email or on mastodon, but this is what I got so far:

The real risk of generative AI is a crisis of knowledge

Universities are often focusing on new technologies’ impact on assessment, but for Joshua Thorpe there are more fundamental questions about how these tools will affect students’ identities as learners […]
