I cover St. Louis City SC and St. Louis University for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. And sometimes the Blues and the Cardinals. And sometimes other things.

This will be the 2nd year in a row on the SLU beat I've covered someone whose father I also covered. Last year it was Larry Hughes Jr. This year, it's Dunlap, whose father Jeff I covered at UCLA. (He played 4 minutes in the season we overlapped, so good chance I never actually spoke to him.)

City2's playoff opener will be Sunday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., the day after City SC's final game of the season. Its opponent will be announced on Thursday

Also, City2 was 1-0 against Vancouver, winning in Canada, but 0-1-1 against Ventura County. Vancouver finished with 42 points, Ventura County (the Galaxy's developmental squad) had 41.

In MLS Next Pro, teams get to pick their playoff opponent, so who City2 will play is unknown. Philosophy in past has been who has the longest trip, since Next Pro teams don't charter. So No. 7 Vancouver, which City2 beat 4-2 in only meeting, is likely choice. No. 8 Ventura County would be the other

City2's 18-game unbeaten streak ends with a 2-1 loss at Portland. Game didn't matter to City2, which had clinched best overall record in MLS Next Pro last week. Playoffs start in 2 weeks. Jaaskelainen got a red card and will miss first game

City SC has won three of its last four games. Go figure. Here's the quick gamer, which actually has been on the website since right after the whistle but I'm slow in sending it out. More to come in the morning. www.stltoday.com/sports/profe...

With the win tonight, Critchley moves into sole possession of second place on the City SC coaching win list with 6.

With the win and other results tonight, City SC can't win the Wooden Spoon and will definitely finish ahead of Sporting Kansas City. City will finish 13th in the West

In other local soccer news, SLU tied Dayton 0-0 at Hermann Stadium. SLU is 2-0-1 in A-10 play, Dayton is 2-0-2

It's a final: City SC 3, Austin 1. Three road wins in a row for City SC, two goals by Marcel Hartel and a late clincher from Simon Becher. Three wins in four games for City SC.

Looks like a no comment from Bradley Carnell about being let go by St. Louis last year....

Tip of the cap to Bradley Carnell for winning the Supporters' Shield with Philadelphia as the team with the best record in MLS.

At the half, City SC 2, Austin 1. Hartel with 2 goals, giving him 4 in past 4 games, 9 on the season. He's alone in 3rd on City SC all-time list with 12, behind Klauss and Lowen. Hartel's past five goals have been on the road
tomtimm.bsky.social
Hartel puts City SC back ahead 2-1 in the 45th minute. His ninth goal of the season ties him with Klauss for team lead
tomtimm.bsky.social
Austin ties it on a corner kick in the 36th minute. 1-1.
tomtimm.bsky.social
Hartel scores again from outside the box and City SC goes up 1-0 on Austin in the 28th minute.

#citysc roster notes: First time for this lineup. First time Padelford hasn't started since he joined the team. First start for Totland since July 19. Lowen not on roster (personal reasons), Morales goes in. Pompeu back in, McSorley comes out; Kessler and Fall reunited at center back
tomtimm.bsky.social
So, obviously, no Lowen in the lineup tonight.
