I saw Bugonia last week, and I'm feeling conflicted about it. It's well made, with great performances, plotting and music, but... thematically, it's kind of a mess: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPLA...

In case you missed it, I made a video series on the best movies of the 2020s (so far), divided in 4 parts:
- most prestigious
- cult classics
- hidden gems
- blockbuster favorites
You can watch the full series right now on my 2nd channel: www.youtube.com/@LikeStories...

New video out now! It's 2004, and two men set out on a roadtrip not knowing they were about to create one of the last portraits of a world right on the precipice of changing forever: youtu.be/FjV3tkrCYIY

New video out now! Comparing Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men to the Coen Brothers adaptation, which revealed some surprising differences: youtu.be/_g1TK-TPW-0

To act in this world is to put yourself in moral peril, to shake the foundations of your own philosophy, sometimes overwhelmingly so. In such times, when you're no longer sure which way is right, where do you go? Who do you become?

Well, in the cinema-related video essay space, it does look like a lot of the attention has shifted toward what I guess can be best called the post-cinemastix-movement, where a bunch of relatively smaller and newer creators are doing quite well

New video out now! Hollywood liberalism is ready to save the world, or at least; in their own self-constructed fantasies. In reality though, the tropes that have emerged in these movies are actually precisely those that we need to get rid off: youtu.be/sJjODY-PyJY

One small thing I absolutely loved about The Pitt is how it showed how men can be heroic badasses while also talking about their feelings and supporting each other

New video out now! Gladiator 2 tries to tell a different kind of story while also retracing the same comfortable steps of the first movie; a contradiction that not only hurts the sequel itself, but that also casts a painful shadow over the original: youtu.be/XSfRSh4G8Cw

The White Lotus is low-key one of my favorite modern shows; it just has such a vibrant and distinctive personality - a combination of beautiful (digital) cinematography, locations, symbolism, music & vibes - and explores thought-provoking themes in a fun way through fantastic character-work

Loved The Brutalist!

CGI dinosaurs are looking great today, much better actually than in the old movies. My problem is that everything around them feels kind of fake now. Environments used to be and feel like actual places
(The Lost World shots for comparison)

Finally saw Beau Travail (1999), as I should have done a long time ago

New video! The Jedi are standing at a crossroads. Plagued by multiple conflicting visions of who they are supposed to be, their place in the modern Star Wars universe has become a paradoxical one. How did this come to be? And what hope is there to move forward? youtu.be/SqQWKcUt_oM
