These men hadn’t necessarily “surrendered,” right? Don’t you have to be charged in order to surrender? They were allegedly clinging to part of a boat. We had not and have never charged them with a crime.

Calling it stupid significantly minimizes the danger, I believe. It’s more than stupid; it’s cruel and sadistic and power-hungry and regressive; it’s racist and misogynistic and vile. I understand that it’s also literally stupid but think there are words that more closely match the moment.

I am a part of a nonfiction book group where we just all read whatever nonfiction book we want and then tell the group about it. We’ve met monthly in our library for years now and it’s an awesome format! You just have to be a nonfiction geek (like me). #wokebookclub
