Tony was wrongfully sentenced to death in Cleveland in 1984.
Prosecutors and detectives committed perjury, falsified evidence, and buried exonerating DNA.
In 2016, the DNA freed Tony but he’s back on death row today due to a retroactive loophole

2/2 Moving this bill forward is an important step in making the criminal justice system safer and more effective for everyone.
Postconviction evidence of innocence should never be buried or blocked, especially for DNA tests requested by the government that ultimately show one's innocence.

(3/3) In 2018, the OH #SupremeCourt forced Tony back to death row despite acknowledging that the DNA tests show his innocence.
In their ruling opinion, the court urged the state #lawmakers to fix this “unfair law.”
Despite this, defendants still cannot benefit from govt-requested DNA tests.

(2/3) There is also a petition link for the #DNA access bill (HB-221) before the #OhioHouse Criminal Justice Committee. HB-221 would help innocent people access DNA tests requested by the government that show their innocence.
Under current OH law, defendants cannot use these tests postconviction.
