Saturn, rising behind its largest moon Titan.

This scene is a composite of images taken by the Cassini spacecraft on 31 March 2005. At the time, Cassini was 7,000 km from Titan and 1.2 million km from Saturn.

In the foreground is Saturn's giant moon Titan, its hazy, peach-coloured atmosphere extending into space. Behind is Saturn itself, its upper hemisphere crossed by the shadows of its vast ring system.

And indeed when Pioneer Venus got there the T contrasts were a little bigger than Stone's prediction due to the cyclostrophic balance caused by the superrotation. At the time superrotation had not been documented to even be real or to extend to depth if it was.

A really amazing image. It was theoretically expected that many gaps in protoplanetary disks are associated with planets, but imaging the planets in action is elusive. Note that there is still gas flowing through the gap, and accreting onto the star; the planet-disk interaction that makes the

A very hungry planet! 🪐

What appears to be a ripple in space is actually a newborn planet, eating its way through its dusty cradle around a younger version of our Sun 🌞

A white protoplanetary disc at the centre of the picture takes up most of the frame. The elliptical cloud of dust and gas consists of some gaps creating a ring-like structure to the cloud. In one of the larger gaps/rings a little dot (a planet) is visible.

This is a pretty amazing bit of history. I was unaware of Carl Borgmann previously. Note Manabe's pioneering work on CO2 and global warming came out 2 years later than this, so Borgmann was ahead of the game in realizing the growing importance of CO2. We had so much warning,
