I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

NEW: The White House is weaponizing the federal budget during the shutdown to harm Democratic-led cities and states. Targeting $27 billion and counting, it is a major escalation in the president’s efforts to date to interrupt funding and defy Congress.

“Without a doubt, blue states are on the front lines of the attacks,” New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, told me for the story. “They’re coming after us.”

Russ Vought, in particular, has embraced this role. As I wrote in March, his aim is to marry extreme fiscal austerity with Christian values, and to eliminate federal programs seen as too wasteful, “woke” or secular

It is important to remember -- months earlier -- the White House sketched out its vision for the new fiscal year. It was $163 billion in cuts to vital government services, including those that help the poor, and the lowest level of domestic spending in modern history www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/u...

This is important, because we have already seen the president suggest he would weaponize the shutdown to maximize pain, achieve his budget and agenda, and punish political enemies, as I wrote yesterday www.nytimes.com/2025/10/01/u...

My god.

“Watson said she saw agents dragging residents, including kids, out of the building without any clothes on and into U-Haul vans. Kids were separated from their mothers…’It was heartbreaking to watch…seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.’”

NEW: The Trump admin took steps on Wednesday to maximize the pain of the government shutdown, halting billions of dollars in green energy and infrastructure funds for Democratic-led states while readying a plan to lay off federal workers, perhaps in next day or two www.nytimes.com/2025/10/01/u...

New: WH says it has put about $18 billion in infrastructure projects in New York City on hold "to ensure funding is not flowing based on unconstitutional DEI principles." Russ Vought, the budget director, specifically cited the Hudson Tunnel Project and the Second Ave Subway.
