I can't think of any other public service that does the lookup for you... (might be one I build actually).

However, for custom domain handles, a DNS TXT lookup or HTTP request usually works.

Look up DNS TXT _atproto.{custom_handle}.
Or go to {custom_handle}/.well-known/...

I'm actually building something similar, but to serve as an internal admin dashboard... the way I do it is to call public.api.bsky.app/xrpc/app.bsky.actor.getProfile?actor={did} and then use the "avatar" and "banner" URLs from the JSON response!
