Being old enough to have knit in the 70ies and 80ies, I would say finding a book of hønsestrik, or alterknit patterns, will be the best and most authentic way to use an old stash of mixed wool. :)

It is just a vanilla sock, but I purled the sole and heel. I am sure there are patterns out there, I did not use one.
