In sum, the findings suggest that the organizational and political strength of civil society's sectors mattered greatly for how they got through the pandemic with sports and the church coming out on top and culture and leisure faring much worse.

Turning to the sector level we find descriptive evidence supporting our hypotheses that the political capital and the organizational setting of different sectors of voluntary civil society mattered for the impact of the lockdowns and in particular for the reopening of the sectors.

The covid lockdown caused a massive decline in the ordinary volunteering not related to the pandemic crisis: However, across all demographic groups we found no significant variation in the impact of lockdown on level of volunteering. A surprising result.
