The roots of Yukon’s Filipino community can be traced back to one remarkable woman: Socorro "Cory" Alfonso. Cory sparked a wave of migration by becoming one of the territory’s first 10 Filipina nannies. Each woman helped 20 to 30 family members and friends find work and settle in Canada.

For our second look at vernacular log buildings, we're featuring the Old Log Church rectory. First built in 1901, it’s a great example of traditional log building that has been used for over 100 years.

Montague Roadhouse is the only roadhouse to appear on every version of the Whitehorse to Dawson winter route since 1899.

Once a vital stop on the Overland Trail between Braeburn and Carmacks, Montague offered food and lodging for passengers.

Recently, the arts unit assessed the condition of the Whitehorse Aboriginal Women's Circle monument by Ken Anderson. They track changes such as any moisture damage, paint fading, graffiti marks and cracks.

Across the Yukon, you'll find vernacular log buildings. Vernacular buildings are functional and reflect local materials and knowledge. Logs were used to build cabins, caches, stores, and roadhouses. Some still stand at historic sites like Huchá Hudän/ Fort Selkirk and Gindèhchik/Rampart House.

Remember that the Ch'ëdähdëk (Forty Mile) historic site remains closed while ongoing restoration work is underway. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and Government of Yukon ask visitors not to travel to the site until it is officially reopened.

The Yukon is home to two sites of Outstanding Universal Value, Tr’ondëk-Klondike (inscribed in 2023) and Kluane / Wrangell-St. Elias / Glacier Bay / Tatshenshini-Alsek (inscribed in 1979).

As the snow melts, Gold Rush-era artifacts are exposed along the Whitehorse waterfront. They might seem like good souvenirs, or debris to clean up, but leave them be! It is unlawful to disturb these items. Many artifacts are made of iron which quickly deteriorates once removed from the river.
