Some govt debt is covered by issuing of bonds. They get interest.
The rest is smoke and mirrors.
And that's why 'government debt' is not what governments say it is.
It's quite perplexing and there is a guide to this, albeit USA, called The Deficit Myth, by Stephanie Kelton.
