Hi, I’m Becki Lawson, a wildlife vet at @zslofficial.bsky.social, and today I will be exploring disease surveillance in wild birds in light of the overall health of people, animals, and the ecosystem – in short: One Health.

1/ 🧵Bird songs and calls are an important way that people experience the natural world. They’re also one of the key means of surveying bird populations. In this #BOU2025 talk I will review @btobirds.bsky.social research to explore opportunities and challenges of #bioacoustics in #ornithology

1/7 Variation between individuals is important as it determines how adaptable to change a population might be. Even generalist spp are often comprised of specialist individuals, but specialisation is often only studied across single traits which is limiting.

The plastics ingested by gulls and storks at landfills ending up in wetlands 😨 #BOU2025
1/🧵 One of the main drivers of 🌍 change is pollution
Birds foraging in landfills eats #plastics that egest in natural areas by pellets in a process known as biovectoring
We’re at the #BOU2025 presenting how we compare and quantify the biovector role of some aquatic species towards a natural area

Uncovering Alpine swift foraging behaviour using GPS tracking & DNA metabarcoding! For the first time we describe Alpine swift foraging movements and what factors impact foraging trips, short-term range area size, & the prey diversity fed to nestlings #BOU2025 #ornithology 1/7

Wild birds are hit by habitat loss, climate change, and disease. Count garden birds to help the #RSPB collect data and clean feeders and water baths to help birds. 🥰💚 @rspb.bsky.social #BigGardenBirdwatch @chrisgpackham.bsky.social #birds #disease
Feeding garden birds: for better or worse? - Nature in Mind
Feeding garden birds benefits birds and people, but what about disease transmission, predation and the impact on population dynamics?
