🚨 Last day! to comment to the FTC on gender affirming care. The Episcopal Church supports 🏳️‍⚧️ care. Per resolution 2022-D066, we “advocate for access to gender affirming care in all forms as part of our Baptismal call to respect the dignity of every human being.” ⚓️

“As a religious leader, I don’t serve political powers, the principalities of this age. I serve Jesus of Nazareth, who came as a stranger, was oppressed by a state system and taught us and told us to welcome the stranger and to stand with all who suffer.” — Episcopal Bishop Julia Whitworth

It should be needless to say, but it is perhaps at this moment worth saying, that transgender individuals have the same right as anyone else to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

under no circumstances can the legitimacy of a desire to see appropriate reforms made to our gun laws become an excuse to equivocate regarding any attempt to categorically deny trans people rights - *any* rights - that others retain

Thank you to Episcopal News Service for honoring the Rev. Vicki Gray with this story about her path-breaking life and ministry:

⚓️
Photo of the Rev. Dr. Vicki Gray, deacon in the Episcopal Church, who died on August 3 at the age of 86. Vicki was the first openly trans person to be ordained in the Diocese of California (San Francisco Bay Area), in 2006.

In this posed photograph taken from her Facebook page, she wearing a black blouse and baby-blue knitted cardigan sweater, a blue-and-white necklace and earrings. She has blond hair and a broad smile as she looks directly at the camera.

Good piece of reporting here on the impact of anti-trans laws on communities beyond trans folks and their families. We hear many of these stories from churches across the country.

We are so sad to have lost our comrade the Rev. Dr. Vicki Gray over the weekend. She was a dear friend, fierce advocate, devoted deacon, and member of our Steering Committee for many years. We lift up our friend with gratitude for her life and witness. ⚓️

Deacon Vicki Gray stands, smiling broadly, amidst a crowd of fellow advocates for LGBTQ inclusion at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Anaheim in 2009. Vicki is wearing a bright green shirt with white lettering that says:

HERE I AM
SEND ME!
I am a witness
to God’s
inclusive love

The others in crowd are wearing similar tshirts in bright green, red, and blue colors.

We are here! and the Episcopal Church as a whole is trans-affirming and is advocating for trans rights.

Yes, and the Episcopal Church as a whole is trans-affirming. See, for example, this post on Trans Day of Visibility (and so much more).

Today is the first death anniversary of our beloved Rev. Gari Green. We miss her so much - her wisdom and wicked sense of humor. Gari would have a lot to say about the present times, and we carry her voice with us. Here is what we wrote last year. ⚓️

Amazing news! I just got word that Kelly Ayotte has just vetoed HB148, a bill that would repeal non-discrimination protections for trans people in New Hampshire. It was a long and at many times terrifying journey, but I'm glad she understood how terrible this would be for all Granite Staters.

This afternoon several trans clergy & allies from the Episcopal Diocese of California rallied with others outside Stanford Medical Center protesting “compliance in advance” with Trump admin demands to curtail care for people under 19, against medical evidence. ⚓️

Trans and allied Episcopal clergy rally outside Stanford Medical Center. There are four adults in the photo, all wearing clerical collars; two are holding hand-lettered signs in pink and blue that say “Trans Rights Are Human Rights.” A crowd of several hundred people is gathered outside Stanford Medical Center for a rally for trans health care on July 14, 2025; several folks are holding signs and one is waving a pink and blue flag. The rally is in response to Stanford’s abrupt decision to curtail certain health care procedures for trans youth and young adults under age 19, apparently in response to political pressure and against current medical standards.

It has been two years today since we lost Iain Stanford to cancer, surrounding him with love and care in his final days as he made his way into God’s own keeping. A few days before he died, Iain and Cameron recorded a final conversation—words of courage even for these times. ⚓️

Today the Episcopal Church commemorates the life of the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, a remarkable scholar, activist, and priest who likely was also trans. We give thanks for Dr. Murray’s life, work and witness in the civil rights and feminist movements both within and beyond the borders of the church. ⚓️

Continuing Juneteenth & Pride: today is Pauli Murray’s feast day in the Episcopal Church! ⚓️

“When my brothers try to draw a circle to exclude me, I shall draw a larger circle to include them. Where they speak out for the privileges of a puny group, I shall shout for the rights of all humankind.”
The Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, scholar, activist, priest, sits smiling at their desk surrounded by a library of books, holding a pencil and absorbed in writing. They wear a clerical collar and a bright blue jacket.

Pauli was a longtime and tireless civil rights scholar who kept up yearslong correspondence with Eleanor Roosevelt; whose legal theories on sex discrimination deeply influenced Ruth Bader Ginsburg; who was a founder of NOW; and who later in life became the first Black person understood to be a woman to be ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. Pauli had a woman partner and was also very likely transgender, although they lived ahead of times when the reality of being gay and transgender could be lived out publicly.

July 1 is the feast day of Pauli Murray in the Episcopal Church’s calendar of saints, Lesser Feasts and Fasts — continuing a celebration of what some folks call Liberation Month in June as we have been celebrating Juneteenth and Pride.

A beautiful evening with the Episcopal Diocese of California at the Trans March SF ⚓️
An Episcopal priest celebrates communion on the sidewalk in front of the Franciscan friary near Dolores Park, San Francisco, ahead of the Trans March SF, June 27, 2005. The congregation is gathered around a small table with bread and a chalice; a Progress Pride flag flies above the door of the friary. About twenty Episcopalians are gathered in front of the friary with signs supporting the Trans March SF: “You Are Beloved. No Exceptions;” “Respect the Dignity of Every Human Being;” and homemade signs. Another view of the crowd — eighteen or so Episcopalians gathered ahead of the Trans March SF with signs and colorful garb. Many smiles! A view of the Trans March SF, with Episcopalians carrying signs and marching together: “Trans is Sacred,” “You are Beloved,” “Some People Are Trans. Get Over It,” “Trans Rights are Human Rights.”

Notes for Pride weekend - a number of Episcopal clergy and lay folks were be present at a rally led by trans youth at San Francisco City Hall last night. Today we join the SF Trans March, starting with a Eucharist at 4:45pm outside the friary (573 Dolores) on Dolores Park. All welcome! ⚓️
About a dozen Episcopal clergy and laity gathered at a rally for trans health care outside San Francisco City Hall, June 26, 2026. Some are wearing clergy collars and several are dressed in shades of pink and blue. They are holding handmade and printed signs reading “Beloved,” “Trans is Sacred,” and “You Are Beloved / No Exceptions / The Episcopal Church in the Bay Area,” decorated in blue and pink and Pride Progress flag colors
