I hiked through so many areas that had burned since 2005 (like everything around Ollalie), I can't imagine how different the trail must have been back then.

I was over 1000 km from either end of my hike & in the best physical condition of my life. I woke up & went to sleep with the sun each day & spent all day every day walking & thinking & resting.

I walked past the hospital every day, I ran past the spot where they have their beers at least 6 times during my daily runs.

Not even a little. This shit makes me sick.

I can't get over how weird and hilarious that is 😂

Hiking the PCT is a huge privilege & if you get a chance & you fully embrace it, it can teach you some invaluable lessons about yourself & the world around you.
It can profoundly change & heal you & it is an incredible opportunity for growth.

And while each day you only move north on the map by an almost imperceptible amount, the miles start adding up & before you know it, each day is the farthest you've ever hiked. Dozens become hundreds become thousands. You get faster & stronger. You feel more & more capable.

A trail like this has the potential to both empower you & break you down. It feels impossible big when you first start & many of us encounter obstacles that take us off trail.
But with perseverance & some luck, you start to realize that all you got to do is get up each morning and walk.

"Never forget how wildly capable you are".
This little message brought me a lot of joy that day. Doing something as massive & difficult as trying to walk 4265 km can be extremely intimidating & chances of "failure" are high. But even a fraction of it is a huge achievement.

Day 4 on the PCT we took our first break.
It was cold and windy and the climb up to Mount Laguna was exhausting. Plus, how could you refuse the call of the best French restaurant on the PCT?! Seriously, if you plan on hiking this trail, stop at the Laguna Mountain Lodge 🤤

"Dirt between my toes" has become one of those images I keep returning to when I try to describe the life I miss so much since finishing the trail. I miss feeling so immediately connected with the natural world around me. I miss being so fully immersed in simple, real spaces like this.

The thing with SoCal in march is that the nights still get very cold but the days are already super hot. One moment you're sunbathing by a waterfall, the next it's dark & your pad sprung a leak & your hands are frozen from trying to find the hole in the water.
Also: first trail magic!!

Lake Morena, here we come! Short day of hiking followed by our first burger on trail, our first shower, first fire & first opportunity to relax with other hikers. Still not very busy this early in the season but already met some infamous PCT dudes incapable of letting women talk 🙄

Our first full day on trail. Watching a fellow hiker get medevaced at mile 8 out of 2650 made clear how fragile this adventure of ours really was.
Otherwise a beautiful hike in and out of Hauser Canyon. It was a pleasant day with lots more firsts and a stunning sunset.

Today last year, we started hiking at the Mexican border. It was cold & grey but so incredibly exciting. So many expectations, fears & hopes.

It's such an honor to be a part of this important work and to be quoted together with so many friends & trans people I admire 🥰
Thank you for sending me a copy, Oliver 🤍

It's immediately iconic in a wonderfully weird & charming way. Kinda like a reverse cybertruck.

Sometimes I pick up a piece of gear and instantly have an emotional connection with it. Those are always fun moments 🥰

Sketchiest bridge I crossed last year if you don't count random tree trunks. Trail going up from the PCT to Bishop pass, Easter Sierra.
