We welcome this principled decision that recognises that such a working group was never about transparency: it was about hounding some of the most critical voices in the EU.

The European Parliament must now proactively cooperate fully with law enforcement. But to prevent future corruption, it must also finally reform its whistleblower rules to ensure those who expose such wrongdoing are protected, and monitor the MEPs who are meeting malign foreign actors more robustly.

In March 2024, it was alleged that several MEPs had taken money to promote Russian propaganda on Youtube. Our data further shows that MEPs have, in this mandate alone, declared meetings with Russian government representatives on at least 19 occasions.

During the event, we welcomed many influential guests, including Commissioner for Justice @michaelmcgratheu.bsky.social and Members of the European Parliament Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle and @danielfreund.bsky.social.

This project aims to strengthen EU member states’ ability to detect, investigate and prosecute cross-border corruption more effectively, by improving access to ownership and financial data, boosting cooperation, and providing research-based recommendations.

📃 Together with @transparency-eu.bsky.social @corporateeurope.org, and @lobbycontrol.bsky.social we also sent a joint letter to the Presidents of the EP’s political groups, urging them to take these allegations into consideration.
