In November, we challenged the widely accepted view from the aviation industry that air traffic growth drives economic growth.

The analysis found that this link is actually weaker than commonly claimed in many regions across Europe.

In October, we analysed the emissions data from 127,000 plug-in hybrids and found that, despite carmaker pressure on the EU to treat these cars as clean vehicles, they pollute almost as much as petrol cars.

In July, we looked at the growing size of cruise ships.

Because they spend significantly more time at berth, cruise ships produce more than 6x more port-side emissions than container ships.

Plugging in at port would eliminate almost all of it and cut the ship’s total yearly emissions by 1/5.

As the aviation industry gathered at the Paris Air Show to show off their latest fossil-fuel-powered aircraft, our analysis suggested that weak innovation in aircraft technology is undercutting the sector’s green transition.

In June our research revealed that the bonnet height of new cars in Europe is increasing by half a centimetre a year, driven by the growth in new SUV sales.

This “carspreading” trend is a worrying development for road safety, as high-fronted cars bring a higher risk of fatality in a crash.

In April, we found that emissions from European aviation almost bounced back to 2019 levels in 2024, with the top polluters being Ryanair, Lufthansa and British Airways.

The study analysed how the EU’s carbon market is currently failing to address the true cost of these emissions.

In March, our 2025 State of European Transport showed that Europe was on track to save 20 million tonnes of CO2 in 2025 thanks to more electric cars, but that air traffic growth is undermining these carbon savings.

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re looking back at some of our biggest data stories from the last year.

In January, we looked at the aviation industry’s plans to double its passenger traffic by 2050 and found that this will deplete its carbon budget as early as 2026.

BREAKING: The EU chooses complexity over clarity. Clinging to combustion engines won't make European carmakers great again.

Today’s proposal from the European Commission will extend the sales of cars with engines & divert investment from EVs, while China races further ahead of Europe’s carmakers.

Tolling doesn’t have to mean a big spike in prices. Under the most ambitious German toll scenario, the added cost would amount to only 0.84 eurocents for a beer transported across the country.

The same cost increase could be also due to wear and tear of trucks on the poor road.

Our research found that since 2024, road repairs have happened largely through EU and international funding.

Three new “mega-projects” for road reconstruction announced in 2025 total over €12 billion, 15x more money for road infrastructure than in 2024.

Implementing this “polluter pays” system is a practical and sustainable option for paying for road repairs on the TEN-T network and repairing 25,000 km of road and 344 bridges damaged during the war.

The EU’s 2035 target IS the certainty that the industry needs.

Some car executives suggest a return to the combustion engine will restore Europe’s competitiveness.

Similarly, in all EU countries that manufacture electric cars, the corporate channel is the main market.

This means that such legislation would only reinforce the current trend.

But despite this advantage EV sales in the corporate market have not even reached the same levels as the private market. Companies clearly lead on electrification in only three EU countries.

EU action on fleets needs to be ambitious and trend-changing. Companies register 60% of all new cars and enjoy greater benefits to go electric than private consumers in 23 out of 27 EU countries.

In Germany, businesses get a staggering €14,000 perk over four years compared to private buyers.

NEW: Sales of locally produced EVs could increase by 1.2 million over three years by requiring large companies to electrify a bit faster, with made-in-EU requirements, T&E research shows.

This is more than 2x the annual production of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg for all powertrains.

EU 2035 latest: The oil lobby’s push for an EU biofuels loophole could create an unsustainable demand for animal fats and used cooking oil – the equivalent of 120 pigs per car.

Passenger growth at Europe’s major airports is projected to skyrocket in the coming years.

But this will likely bring little to no additional benefits to the economy – and in some cases may have negative effects.

It’s time to rethink how we see the role of airports.
