⚠️To translate the Kunming-Montreal mechanisms into action, particularly to monitor & respond to #biodiversity impacts driven by consumption and trade, the GEIC indicator is valuable. Its absence from the CBD risks weakening the frameworks to guide international progress.

🔊We call on the Commission to review the overarching methodology at the earliest. There is clearly sufficient data to enable the development of a more credible and evidence-based process which is so vital to facilitate achievable, pragmatic and effective enforcement of the law for the long term.

📊Existing datasets including Trase can inform risk-based plans to target checks on shipments from higher risk operators, ports of export & subnational regions. We’re more committed than ever to work with Competent Authorities to make sense of the available data - helping to apply it to best effect.

🔎It is critical that Competent Authorities develop risk-based criteria that use best available data to assess the risks relating to their imports, and that enforcement checks are targeted on shipments from the areas with the highest risk of #deforestation, illegality and human rights abuses.

Trase @trase.earth · May 23
⚖️While the #EUDR remains a critically important law which will have an important positive impact when it comes into effect, this approach to benchmarking risks reduces the ability of Competent Authorities to target enforcement checks where they are needed most.

⚠️We welcome the news that the EU has reached agreement on #EUDR country risk benchmarking classifications. However, we remain concerned that the chosen methodology has led to country rankings which do not accurately reflect the #deforestation and legal risks in areas of commodity production.
