Our train did not have any delay unlike EC62. However, changes in Mannheim and Frankfurt were super tight but I eventually made the trains back home.
Interesting: when I left Cologne last week‘s Friday, it was raining - now it rains again… 🌧️

It’s basically the same route I took on my way to Italy. I preferred this train as it‘ll continue to Mannheim, so I can stay off #DB as long as possible on my way home. And: it‘s quite a pleasant place to stay for 7 hours without the need of changing trains. 🧘🏻‍♂️

Both SBB trains in double traction depart simultaneously for Basel. We travel past Lake Como + Gotthard Base Tunnel, while the EC62 opposite of us takes the Simplon route + Lötschberg Base Tunnel. Both are scheduled to arrive at the same time. The race is on. 🤞🏻

Today, this Frecciarossa stops and drops me at the through-track at Porta Garibaldi. I have time and instead of walking or taking the subway, I return to Centrale with the airport shuttle regional train, the only connection between these two stations. Frecciarossa - pleasant as always. 👍🏻

Trieste to Milan, early start at 6am, going home. Not the seemingly shorter route through Austria - trying to stay off #DB as long as possible. Ans avoid the hassle and delay at Austrian-Bavarian border controls.

I stumbled across this nice metre-gauge #tram to Opicina (hadn‘t done any research before), which is partly operated as a furnicular in the steepest section (up to 26%), rising to 343m above sea level and providing superb views of Trieste. Highly recommended, whether train enthusiast or not. 👍🏻😎🚋

Spot on time arrived in #Trieste Centrale. One of the few to get off, most travellers disembarked in Venice at 6am, I suppose. Got some good sleep instead. 😴
I spent the last 24 hours (an 1 day on Interrail) to get from #Palermo up here, i.e. only at stations and on trains (including train ferry).
September 19, 2025 at 8:14 AM
Continuing northbound by sleeper.
Gorizia - not getting off today, though it would make a good stop.

In Villa San Giovanni, I switched to the Frecciargento to Rome; the IC already had a delay of 35‘ after the train ferry and would only arrive 1h (if on schedule) before my onward night train. 😬
Now I‘m supposed to have 2h in Rome to grab a proper dinner (and in the right Italian dinner time 🍝).
September 18, 2025 at 1:50 PM
Today, heading back from Palermo and leaving the island.
Surely, also this IC starts late and even then, people kept waiting in front of the train for 15‘ before boarding.
However, again a nice trajectory experience with the last Sicilian-typical Arancino (nothing else to buy on board).

Follow-up: continued from Giarre-Riposto via Messina to Palermo. Heavily delayed train from Messina, haven’t heard of any trains from the ferry continuing on time. Nice views, though.

Correction: train #5 (train #9 will continue from Randazzo.

Funny thing: the departure times are partially as exact as to half a minute. Still, not related to reality…

We tourists have the train mostly to ourselves. 📷🌋
Quite a pleasant ride.
Fun fact: like most of Italy the Circumetnea also has its rails painted white to lower the temperature by 5-10°.
Was surprised how much of the start (Biancavilla/Adrano) was a subway ride.
September 16, 2025 at 7:48 AM
Today, #Circumetnea on the narrow gauge train of FCE. First, Metro had to bring me to Nesima station to take the replacement bus to Paternò, that part is suspended due to long-term construction.
Finally, starting in Paternò with train #9 to Randazzo.
Weather is clear today, other than last weekend.😎

However, it‘s worth visiting, the Greek Theater and the Roman Amphitheater + historical sites on Ortigia Island; you can feel the 2500+ years of history.
Quite warm here for mid-September… 😎
Hardly reliable real-time bus information - none came even giving extra time. 🤷🏼‍♂️
I‘m good on foot though.

#Siracusa today, 1hr ride on the Regional. My southernmost stop this time, europe-wise I‘ve been further south (Algeciras).
The stazione is under heavy construction, people congregate in narrow tunnels below the tracks, better don‘t panic here.

#Agrigento makes another beautiful station.
However, it is poorly and not directly served from Catania/Siracusa (slightly better and quicker from Palermo though).
Feels like abandoned (it actually was today) but well maintained.

A station visited that I‘ll likely won’t ever take a train from/to. 🤔
September 14, 2025 at 3:41 PM
#Agrigento today, not by train though, it had taken the long way round and is directly served by bus from Catania.

Makes a big check on my bucket list, wanted to come here for a long time. ✅ Very impressive and full of history, like (but different) my visit of Luxor many years ago.
September 14, 2025 at 3:33 PM
#Taormina is the first beautiful station since Milano Centrale, I must admit, @lennydunord.bsky.social #Moingiorno
September 13, 2025 at 1:24 PM
However, that crossing may not be as impressive as the slow ferry crossing and neither would they serve you lunch in the train…

Today I‘ve got the pleasure of taking the train ferry Villa San Giovanni to Messina. Very interesting this operation.
Can’t wait to see the bridge they’re - eventually - planning to build.
September 13, 2025 at 1:18 PM
Tempting, but I hesitate with the timing, do the Highlands also make a good November destination?

I rather prefer one-layer clothing destinations (currently on my way to Sicily), had planned to go there in Summer/September once I have spare time and the budget.
