Great observations about a great film. Feels lyrical and leecherous. And the ending...incredible. The DNA somehow found its way into MAXXXINE.

Boorman and the Devil is fantastic.

It's a deep dive into the making and release of the ill-fated Exorcist II – one of the biggest, most beautiful studio swings of the 1970s – that doubles as a fascinating (and long overdue) portrait of John Boorman, one of the last century's great film artists.

I’ve seen two works-in-progress cuts of BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL, but tonite’s sold out screening of the real thing at @beyondfest.bsky.social was transcendent. Congrats to the whole team. I’ve always enjoyed The Exorcist 2 as spectacle but now I’ve finally got my head around what it’s trying to do.

Beyond Fest screening #1: BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL is a deeply intimate look at one of Hollywood’s most notorious mistakes that turns into a love letter of originality and artistic vision despite the studio system working against you at every turn.

Genuinely loved this!

Boorman and the Devil is a miracle. Not only is it just a great doc but it does the impossible: it makes me want to watch Exorcist 2 again. #BeyondFest

It was really fun to write about one of my favorite #FantasticFest experiences - @travisstevens.bsky.social’s THE WOUNDED FAWN in 2022, starring @joshruben.bsky.social.

Published inside the @fangoria.bsky.social mini issue in this year’s program! Thanks for having me!

Technically the RABID remake shot before this.

But it was a joy working with Phil. Very excited to see his work in NIGHT PATROL.

“Boorman and the Devil turns a financial disaster into a thoughtful, kind, and ultimately moving look into what it truly means to be creative. Begone, artless craftsmen. Let the visionaries return. Here’s to ‘bad art.’ It’s the second word that matters.” 🖤

John Boorman’s Exorcist II: The Heretic: both utterly sublime and total claptrap. David Kittredge’s BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL makes the case for it as a masterpiece of cinematic ruin, and turns its tale into a thoughtful, kind, and moving look into what it means to be creative.

★★★★ review from Venice.
