Her arms instinctually wrap around her twin’s shoulders, chin resting on her shoulderplate. Dream looks past Nightmare to her personal guard, their lovers, who follow not too far behind on their own mounts. They, too, wear armor from head to toe but Dream still squints at them as if it would help her see past the metal to any hidden injuries. Nightmare’s hand caresses Dream’s back. “They are well, sister,” she murmurs into the side of Dream’s skull, “as am I.” Relief sweeps through Dream’s body, yet she still holds tight to her twin, afraid that Nightmare would vanish into smoke if she relaxed. “As if I had any doubt,” Dream teases. Her voice is scratchy and she hates it - hates how her anxiety betrays her at a moment like this. But four months with her sister away cannot be erased by a mere stroke, no matter how tender. Nightmare doesn’t mock her for her fault; Her sister just continues to hold her close and lead them back to the palace. Dream keeps her eye sockets open, terrified to close them and wake from the fantasy.

Dream takes that letter into her hands, which is sealed with the waxen symbol of her father’s house and feels her smile strain. This is the ballroom, she reminds herself. The ballroom is not a safe place to scream. Worse still, when she slides her phalanx under the seal, watches the wax crack and pulls out the letter - that is when she finds that it is a summons.

Her father loves pulling her away from royal duties to quote-un-quote spoil her. Dream reluctantly raises her head to lay eyes on her father… King-Consort, Corneilus. She should have known he would not let her be on today of all days - the day when Nightmare returns from her many-months long expedition to the south with the rest of her guard and a modest platoon assigned by their mother. What kind of father shows such open disdain for his daughter? She couldn’t shake the lingering disgust that she began to feel when looking at him after he had discovered Nightmare’s affliction. What kind of a father would accuse his daughter of being a beast? A demon? What kind of a father…

He reaches into his breast pocket to reveal a small bell - the sort of trinket Dream has seen people use to call hunting dogs. She thinks that a dog would be nice, too, especially if it were cute. It rings, clear, delicate, almost pleasant. The subtle creak of the study doors opening once more draws Dream’s eyes. Dream does not expect the woman that she finds before her - Like herself, the woman is of skeletal ancestry, though that is where the similarities end. She is tall, with thick, scarred bones. One of her eyes lights is a gentle white and the other a deep red… both of which are fixed on the King-Consort with a look of unrestrained malice. The dark, devilish horns atop her skull arch up as if attempting to pierce the very air around her. The woman is clearly a warrior, but she’s dressed in rags that look as if they’d been pulled straight off a beggar. Even her feet are bare. Those, too, are scarred and calloused. And the collar - a horrible, ugly hunk of rough metal attached to the woman’s neck. It’s appalling. Still, she holds herself with the grace and confidence of a monarch. “This is Cross,” Dream’s father explains pleasantly, as if introducing her to a bunny, “she’s come to work in the castle as your new knight.” This is supposed to be a knight?
