Treadwell's Books
@treadwells-books.bsky.social
Esoteric arts, great books, high culture, witchcraft, scholarship. Advanced degrees in the banned, the burned, the ridiculed.
Last week Treadwell's acquired a huge collection of vintage tarot decks. Maybe 700, as they fill ten packing boxes.Every deck must be counted to ensure it's complete. So far, each has been opened and shuffled. Out of the 18 we've done, one was missing a card. Here's my niece helping after hours.

Bookshop life is a kind of paradise. Hard work, but pure and good. Independent, cash- poor, soul-rich. I'm so lucky, everyday, to work in it. Yes that's a mummy case stood up in the background. 😁

Ancient rituals.

Good night from Treadwell's. May your dreams be of this.

After everyone's gone home, the bookshop is silent. The quiet of books waiting, resting. The scent of dragons blood incense is almost imperceptible.

And then you're a snake- wrapped, bound up, egg of potentiality, and you're facing the flame-edged challenge of a sword.

And then, with only a touch more fabric vibe, we're suddenly in a tarot card. Admittedly, by this point the spiral wrapping has degenerated completely into a safety sort of wavy draping...

Continuing with the spiral wrap theme (?obsession) skipping through the centuries. Sort of snakey on the left, and sort of scarf like on the right. I mean, are we seeing Renaissance gendering of Serapis exemplars?

London launch at Treadwell's tonight! Drop a reply if you want to join us. 33 Store Street, Bloomsbury, London.

Love this chap. The ancient world is both profound and curious. Not trying to be irreverent but the questions just crowd into my mind uncensored. What's with the wrapping? Is it shrouding? Is it a python? Is it kundalini? Is it first steps in shibari?

At the moment I'm going crazy for wrap arounds. Serpentine, sisal, hemp, even tentacle. The body unwrapped or en-slithered. What constrains, releases. The life force rises up the spiral , or winds down into the earth. Or both.

@paulrobichaud.bsky.social I treasure the research in your book, to the extent I find I am pressing copies into the hands of Treadwell's customers almost daily. The writing, too, is sublime. Masterpiece.

Last summer's sofa snapshot - Ithell Colquhoun art world expert Dr Amy Hale, with our own Christina Oakley Harrington. Amy came to talk occult surrealism. Just two dear friends sharing a laughing hug before it got started.

Today I celebrate our 'Honouring Nature' shelves. Plant folk lore, foraging, forest bathing, right to roam, organic farming, climate crisis, kids' activities. Because it's important, because it's sacred to us.
November 7, 2025 at 3:20 PM
This the the famous Treadwell's sofa, on which authors are interviewed, proposals have been made and even, acccording to rumours about a 2004 afterparty, a child was conceived. The folklore is real, kids.

Best job perk: hosting a bookish party almost every Thursday night, for bright, fun London folk. Being an indie bookshop is hard hard work, but worth it every day.

First few days of the month are dedicated to unpacking the deliveries. Books making tabletop mountains, foothills, and cliff tops. Here's a snapshot. We've spared you an image of all the cardboard boxes we need to break down, to keep it cheerful.

Launch event last night for @icysedgwick.bsky.social and Hazel Atkinson's great books. Ghosts, magic, witches, worldwide folklore. We met new friends, wine was drunk, ghost stories were told. Tired but happy this morning. #dorlingkindersley .

Fun fact of the day: Treadwell's is the home of Pamela Colman Smith's fireplace . Re-homed from her house in Parc Garland, Cornwall. It's now a bit of a shrine. Tarot queen love.

Today's customer question: "Why do you open only at midday?" Answer: we love nighttime parties that run as late as folk want to stay, so opening at 10 am the next day, well, nope.

We've been in Store Street 14 years. We cherish our neighbours, one and all. Carmen's print shop, Sophie's florist, Amelie's Wine Bar, the athletes' bike shop. We're all passionate about our "thing" and we all work incredibly hard to run small businesses we're proud of. #smallbusinesslondon

Last night we had a party to celebrate Patricia MacCormack's latest: Death Activism. Ideas, conversation, drinks, books. When Continental philosophy and thoughtful occulture are at their best, they're luminous. @bloomsburybooksus.bsky.social

Treadwell's is happy to be here at last. Bookshop at midnight. Haunted? Maybe, or maybe the books are alive and just waiting for the door to lock so they can be alone to come to life.
