Trent Rivers Trust
@trentriverstrust.bsky.social
We're a rivers charity dedicated to creating a healthier Trent and tributaries. We work with nature to reduce pollution, flooding and create messier rivers full of life.
Bringing back burbot means bringing back a free-flowing river that is more resilient to drought flood, pollution and extreme temperatures. It means getting it right for the Trent and the species that once called it home.

We've written more about our plans for burbot in the Trent on our blog.

Bringing back species means that restoration and reintroduction need to go hand in hand. In the case of the burbot, it means bringing back a river that is connected to its floodplain, has deep, cool pools of water and allows this freshwater cod to move through vast stretches of river.

Habitat becomes fragmented, conditions, for example, water quality or water temperature, worsen, and eventually, it is not just the species that is lost, but the river and catchment that can support it.

Huge thanks to the team at Dreamy Cow for making space for nature and water on their land.

From small islands, gravel deposits, sediments settling out and, simply, the lively noises the watercourse, replacing two ditches, now makes! This is a site where we'd expect to uncover something new every time we visit.

Lapwing!

We're continuing to maintain this new wetland area, such as reseeding, introducing wetland plants or introducing hedgerows, so this new 500-metre stretch of river can really pack a punch in terms of habitat and phosphate trapping.

From 24th December, the team will be off for a well-deserved break.

May the seasonal currents flow in our river's favour.

Codspeed, until 2026.

Before we sign off, we'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, partners, trustees, supporters and funders for their support in 2025. Together, we made big things happen, and thanks to your ongoing support, we're gearing up for even bigger plans come next year.

While not a silver bullet, these cost-effective measures can take the edge off flooding and provide communities with more time to prepare.

Working with nature to create spongier landscapes is an approach we take to create an environment that can better withstand extremes.
