A clip of Longcroft for #HillfortsWednesday - a complex hillfort to the east of #Oxton in the #ScottishBorders. It had 3 periods of construction that have created four ramparts with intermediate ditches. The traces of several round houses can also be seen.

#OTD 52BC Vercingetorix, leader of the Gauls, surrendered to #JuliusCaesar, ending the siege of Alesia. He was imprisoned before being ceremonially strangled to death in 46BC.

#HighRochester Roman Fort, Bremenium, on #DereStreet in Northumberland, linking #Eboracum & #Trimontium. Built under Agricola after the #Boudiccan revolt, it guarded the frontier. A most intriguing discovery is a round tomb.

Happy Kalends of #October! 🍂 Named for octo (“8”), it was the 8th month in Rome’s earliest 10-month calendar. Protected by #Mars, it marked the end of military & farming seasons & hosted many festivals: Mundus Patet, Meditrinalia, Augustalia, & games like the Ludi Capitolini & Ludi Victoriae Sullae.

Autumn is drawing in, the days are getting cooler and what better way to warm up than a long soak in a hot bath? The #Romans also enjoyed this treat. #Trimontium had a #bathhouse sited outside the fort walls probably due to the risk of fire.

#InternationalTranslationDay - Lucius Livius Andronicus was born in Tarentum in 284 BCE. Although he was a writer and a playwrigth, he was sold as a slave when Tarentum was conquered in 272 BCE. His masterpiece is the translation of the Odyssey into Latin, Odusia. Only 46 lines survived.

The #Antonine Baths of #Carthage powered by the mighty #Zaghouan #aqueduct (built under #Hadrian ) & the vast La Malga cisterns - 15 vaulted chambers holding up to 60,000 m³ each. One of Rome’s greatest feats of engineering in Africa, it supplied water until damaged in the 5th and 11th centuries.💧🏛️

#OTD 28 Sept 48 BC Pompey the Great arrived in #Egypt after Pharsalus only to be killed by agents of Ptolemy XIII. He was decapitated & his body thrown into the sea. #Caesar was appalled at such treatment of his former ally & now mighty enemy. Pompey’s remains were taken to his wife Cornelia.

#Harry visits Chedworth #Roman Villa! 🏛️✨ Built cAD120 & lasting beyond AD424, it shows elite life continued after the legions left. Bathhouses, central heating, a nymphaeum, lavish triclinia, & mosaics with geometric & mythological motifs, including “Winter” in a birrus Britannicus.
