Oh they’re real. American banks will literally charge you for being broke. You can have $0 and they’ll still hit you with a ‘congratulations, you’re poor’ fee. It’s legal here because the U.S. financial system runs on jump-scares.

I’ve had weeks where overdraft fees ate up my paycheck before I even got paid. It’s a system designed to punish people for being broke.
