imagining the eyes from before the sadness, one wonders where the joy withdrew. did it leave on its own, trust fractured in the quiet, or did we simply stop reaching? perhaps repair was possible— therapy, the careful work of listening— but time kept passing, and we never tried. it slipped away before either could name it, and only later did we learn it had always been a syzygy— happiness: life’s mistress, perfect only when briefly aligned.

into the sun rides an elegy, told in scenery— a timeless affair. should there be a tomorrow, would you be there? the questions walk away, refusing to remain; no answers— only endings, only consequence, always the same. is there a need to rhyme? to count, to measure? or is it simply pace— a line of footsteps side by side, without collision, indecision as a wish, an image in one’s head. where does it end? it doesn’t. it goes on infinitely— words rolling like stones, stumbling into meaning; definitions, greetings, new year’s resolutions, meeting the season’s needs without a single reason, a single care, a wisp of an image— and then, no longer there.
