A Decision on a Melbourne Dance Floor that Changed the Entire Course of my Life

November in Melbourne used to be flowers & butterflies, cocktails at the Spring Carnival, & sitting outside cafes with friends basking in the morning sun... Now, in Germany, it’s about trying not to go to bed at 4pm, the hum of leaf blowers & trips to the Chemist to find out Vitamin D is sold out.

Going to the gym in Germany is quite the challenge. There’s smokers out front, the staff eat cake behind the counter & there’s a poster advertising pizza specials… I feel like I’ve put on 5kg before I even get on the treadmill.

Now that most cafes are co-working spaces, I’m wondering who I should hand my leave form to… the barista?

Once an economic powerhouse, Germany struggles to keep up with the digital age, high taxes squeeze the working class, and innovation & creativity are discouraged. Despite all this, I am optimistic & choose to stay. #germany

Living is abroad it's hard being away from your parents. When I go home I realise how much they've aged and how precious time really is. So the first thing I say is... I'm staying in a hotel.

We were admiring the sunset when a woman approached & commented on how nice it was. She said it reminded her of a sunset she had seen a few weeks prior. She insisted on showing us a photo of that sunset & scrolled through photos of her dog but couldn't find it. Meanwhile we all missed the sunset.

Those sliding door moments that change the course of our lives forever. For me, it was a London cab. If I had gotten in it I wouldn't have ended up living in Germany. Do you have a moment that changed the course of your life or the country you live in?

My son's High School art teacher told him "It's impossible to make a career out of art". As an Aussie in Germany who has forged a creative career, I wanted to have it out with the teacher. Instead I realised it's up to me to continue to lead by example. Sons are always observing their fathers.
