This conversation has not run its course, you just can’t follow it. My argument is based on a very different idea than that. My argument is that tipping is harmful to the people it intends to help, and if we want to help them, we must all stop doing it.

Oh no! Not the the dismissive eyeroll! You’re right! Tipping is such an effective way to help people! There’s no reason to change anything or do anything different. It’s better for me to shoulder even more of the burden of wealth inequality than to leave it for its willful architects!

Refusing to tip is not a punishment for the worker. It is an insistence that the responsibility for their compensation does not lie with me to begin with. The waiter’s bills are to be paid, but the customer is not the one who owes them that. You who condemn the non-tippers are the oppressor’s pawns.

BTW, even tho I disagree with @jessethorn.bsky.social about tipping, he is still a true hero to me. Every day I wish I could give more than $10/mo to Maximum Fun. He’s done more for humanity’s wellbeing than I could ever.

“The way things ‘should’ work is irrelevant because that’s not how they ‘do’ work” is a convenient way of invalidating counterarguments. I do tip generously (and at great cost to myself) when I manage to scrounge up enough to take myself out. The real jerks are getting away with scamming me.

My solution won’t hurt them. The exploitation being committed against them is what will hurt them. Everyone here is misguided about where the abuse is coming from.
