If anything, to cut to the chase, what would you call the genre of games that have this as a central mechanic? I don't know any other term except information games.

Those are fair examples of instances of "gatekeeping via information", but were the games designed around that mechanic? (honest question) A game that has jumping isn't necessarily a platformer

Can you give some examples? I suspect you're seeing this as "platformers? Almost all games have jumping in them!". For example, I wouldn't say puzzle games count, but idk if that's what you're thinking of.

I don't think anyone using it really relates the term to any game, "metroidvania" just becomes a word in itself, with its own identity. Adding brainia to it, to me, divorces it from any actual game, and is just a fun way to refer to the gatekeeping via information mechanic. "Information game" is meh
