Nobody reads everything. The goal is building a system that surfaces what matters for your specific work while accepting you'll miss some papers.

What's your system for staying current?

🟢 Use AI tools cautiously
Platforms like Semantic Scholar, ResearchRabbit, and Connected Papers can surface relevant work you'd otherwise miss. They're useful for mapping research networks and finding connections between papers. But they're not perfect, check their outputs!
tscourses.bsky.social
🟢 Follow researchers, not just papers
Professional networks like ResearchGate and LinkedIn let you track what specific scientists are publishing. The catch: set time limits. Social media can eat hours without adding much value to your research.
tscourses.bsky.social
🟢 Set up smart alerts
Table of contents emails from key journals in your field. Custom alerts on PubMed and Google Scholar for specific topics. Preprint server notifications for emerging research.

Drowning in papers? Here's how researchers actually find what they need

Over 3 million scientific papers get published every year. Nobody can keep up with that, so here's what a PhD student, mid-career researcher, and senior group leader actually do to stay current

We're walking around with DNA from people we only discovered 15 years ago. Makes you wonder what other ancient relatives are waiting to be found.

Denisovans weren't just survivors - they were master adapters. They lived everywhere from freezing Siberian caves to high-altitude Tibet. Modern Tibetans even inherited Denisovan genes that help them breathe thin air.
tscourses.bsky.social
The evidence kept turning up in unexpected places. A skull hidden in a Chinese well since the 1930s. A jawbone dredged from the ocean floor. DNA preserved in cave sediments on the Tibetan plateau.
tscourses.bsky.social
Here's the wild part: these people vanished from the fossil record, but their DNA lives on in us. Pacific Islanders carry 4-6% Denisovan DNA, meaning these ancient humans once lived across thousands of kilometers.

A finger bone hidden for 80 years just rewrote human history

In 2008, scientists analyzed a tiny finger bone from Siberia and discovered DNA from an entirely unknown group of ancient humans - the Denisovans.
