I love how AI has made it that now when you do see a cool video of human achievement or nature instead of just enjoying it you also have to wonder if it’s real. It is sucking the life out of everything

There have been *so many* Academia[dot]edu warning signs over the past decade; I’m glad these new terms of service — claiming world rights to your work, your voice, your likeness, your signature, etc — are driving even more people away. May it advance the Ed Tech Luddite Revolution ✊

And one could argue that the US right now is not a democracy.

I deleted my Facebook account a while back. I don't miss that much of it but I do miss @chubblenauts.bsky.social there.

This is a shocker. Having to kill something else to feel in touch with life is pathetic.

"It overshadows all the fear, to see a marlin lit up [with colour], hunting. It's an incredible experience" - Nikki Watt

RIP Graham Greene. Every time he popped up on screen when I was a kid, my mom would excitedly point him out for being an actual Native on the screen. Able to be deadly serious and infinitely hilarious (even in smaller roles like Last of Us), he ate up the screen. Nʌki’wah brother.

University rankings have little meaning, are highly subjective, promote a competition frame, and thwart our academic freedom, as commercial ranking organizations dictate what constitutes “a good university.”

So much distress has been caused by the ANU’s PR mess that I understand there have been formal workplace hazards lodged. Again, ANU execs giving more details to the media than to actual staff. Heartbreaking.

Many weasel words to parse here in ANU statement. Paper could be written about terms for restructuring and redundancies in the uni sector (‘renew’ ‘refresh’ ‘reimagine’), and ‘natural attrition’ when the institution is demoralised to such a degree that ppl leaving is actually unnatural attrition.
drdemography.com
Tough time for many at ANU. At around midday yesterday staff received a university-wide email. The language was ambiguous and could be read to say all forced redundancies would stop. I received many messages from people being forced out. Were they now safe?
I am writing to you today with three key updates for our community regarding the Renew ANU Program:
1. The University leaders have confirmed that all future changes under Renew ANU will be achieved without involuntary redundancies. This means that all future changes under Renew ANU will be achieved through our other mechanisms, including lift and shift/ realignments, continuation of the Recruitment Advisory Committee (RAC), natural attrition, and voluntary separations. We will continue to create greater accountability for senior leaders to ensure compliance with budget and resource allocation.
2. The University's timeline for future change has been brought forward from 31 October to today, Wednesday 20 August 2025. This means that under Renew ANU, no further change proposals will be released in 2025, and as expressed above, no further job losses will occur through involuntary redundancy.
3. Finally, the University will open a second Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) for the entire community next week, with details released via On Campus next Tuesday.

The number of major news outlets that declined to publish this when it is timely and significant AF. 🤔

On Sunday, The Age commissioned an opinion piece from Palestinian author and academic Randa Abdel-Fattah - only to decline publishing it after it was submitted.

Thanks to Randa for letting us publish it here.
