two images of a small cathode ray tube. the upper image shows that it is nearly as small as a ball-point pen, starting out at the same diameter but flaring out into a tiny screen that is about 10mm in diameter. the bottom image shows the same CRT cut in half, with a complex array of small metal electron lenses.

while looking for my alligator/crocodile clip meme, i found this meme as well.
an alligator clip next to a cockroach.

TIL: My Automatic Document Feeder has no problems bulk scanning punched cards. This possibly makes the need for a second card reader solely for digitizing decks not necessary.

a lone glass insulator perches on the crossbar of this telephone pole.
telephone pole with a crossbar, five phone lines stapled to the side, and three wires hung from the crossbar on the right side. the left side has a glass insulator but no attached wire.

telephone poles get treated with fumigants to protect them from insects and fungus attacks. this one has metal tags hammered in that indicate it is protected by Osmose Woodfume.
cracked wooden pole with several metal tags. "JP", "9", two "Osmose Woodfume" tags, and a decaying phone cable stapled to it.

also there was a Mantis.
a pale brown praying mantis. it's holding its forelegs in the trademark position, and staring directly at the camera with its triangular head.

the guy wires have grounding wires.
a concrete block with three guy wires emerging and traveling up the antenna mast, visible in the background. a thinner ground wire has been clamped to each of the three, leading down to a stake driven into the ground.

the cover over this microwave dish appears to have failed.
it looks like a drum perched on the antenna mast. but the "drum head" has torn. it's coming off.

today's hike. went up a mountain, saw an antenna.
a large TV/radio antenna with multiple sets of antennas. clustered in the lower half are several microwave dishes. a low building houses the transmitters.

what was the problem? a while back there was a bad SMS card that i swapped out with a spare. turns out the spare went bad as well, so i just swapped in the original card since i had repaired it. see this thread: mastodon.social/@tubetime/11...
a brown circuit board slightly larger than a business card. it has two columns of resistors, diodes, and wire jumpers, probably 40 total, and four transistors in metal cans.

it was the TAU -- the part of the 1401 that talks to the tape units.
tubetime.bsky.social
you joke but a while back i replaced the belts, added oil, and replaced the clutch in one of the tape units
