I feel like it's pretty important that kids don't get stuck in a New Suburb where there's barely any attachment to the city grid, no shops and their ability to go anywhere is restricted by when one of their parents is both able to and willing to drive them.

I'd prefer an apartment for both, honestly. Kids can have a lot more agency and mobility in a place that doesn't require them to drive to get places.

Those jobs are still not located in cheap places like Flint or Saginaw. They're located in rich and affluent suburbs like Troy, or hell, still located downtown because Detroit's been having something of a renaissance lately.
