Have you looked into the process for this? In many states, it requires time, money, and a lot of paperwork. If getting divorced, you can pretty easily write it into the divorce papers ... But then you'll have a different last name than your kids.

In most states, it's very difficult to change your name without "good reason" like getting married.
When I got married I was glad for the opportunity to no longer be called by the name of my oppressive and abusive father.
