Sated by the simple things in life, shame there's so much complexity to navigate. Love cats & books & music & green tea & bicycles & work (homeless/housing, third sector).
Enjoying Peter Apps' newly released book, standing on a train from the city at it's centre. Always mourn leaving #London. Essential reading on #housing, & similar to his previous book on Grenfell, full of heart & hope, whilst unpicking the patterns that have led to unsustainable crisis #booksky 💙📚

Finished the Parable diptych by Octavia Butler this weekend. Feeling kinda bereft that she didn't publish any further novels she had in mind for this series. Lots of its themes and characters lingering in my mind, like a dream's trace in the early a.m.. #booksky #dystopia #utopia #fiction #scifi 📚💙

Thinking of the family of this "carefree spirit who embraced the freedom of #cycling."

Let's hope Paul's death is a catalyst for lasting change and the article is right that "the shift towards bike-friendly urban spaces is irreversible".

Found the most beautiful #book edge #print today. Didn't buy it as felt it was foolish given it was only half price second hand. I do kind of regret it now tho.

📚💙

Fast paced, reflective & emotive multi-gen snapshots, opening in #NewYork, centred in #Ireland, that ends w/lots of threads tied, whilst others remain forever frayed. I cared about the characters & will be passing on/re-reading. Bonus: it"s part love letter to reading/writing.

💙📚2nd hand #Bookshop finds

Sadly the Lorca one is missing 30 odd pages...be interesting to see if the last two plays make sense as one, but gripped by Blood Wedding so far, then on to this edition of Marlowe's complete works with intro aimed at the "literary gentleman"! 🙃

Excellent timing for these #climate #protesters to crash the stage: the emergence of Caliban, a native reminder of the destruction of colonial conquest? #TheTempest

Extra #drama for a play that has been v harshly treated by the critics. Wish I'd been there!

💙📚 #TheTempest read + historical & contextual notes. The characters Sycorax, Caliban and Ariel linger, with colonial overtones strong. What is alien and strange to the ship wrecked, a comfort to the residents already at home. Prospero merely using the island as tool? #booksky #Shakespeare #poetry

#TheTempest in electrifying opening last night had me rapt for the 1st half & wanting more. Despite critical drubbing the cast got a standing ovation. Drawn by #SigourneyWeaver I loved the minimalism, bleak set & tragic elements. Perhaps a little subdued but I would watch again if it was possible.

💙📚 Beowulf finally read, in pretty folio form, but the speeches are repetitive, the "heroes" too perfect/dull and beyond some interesting/amusing turns of phrase e.g. angry fish, was keen to be on to the next read. #Beowulf #poetry #booksky

💙📚 NYD reading. Gay Berlin, Robert Beachy. "Hatred alone has enjoyed freedom of speech" quoting from the 1860s pamphlet of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs "arguably the first man in modern history to acknowledge openly his sexual attraction to other men". A fascinating read so far, chpt 2.
