Agnostic artist with a strong Christian bent (though really unhappy with the Christian nationalist evangelical trend), thoroughly and delightfully married, vintage car and motorcycle habit, left-leaning according to most. Committed to rigorous honesty.
I’v been watching this Coke can since July or August.

All poetry and music, and art of every true sort, bears witness to [our] continual falling in love with beauty, and [our] desperate attempt to induce beauty to live with [us] and enrich [our] common life.

Graphite #6
5x7”
Pure graphite pressed and worked into bristol board with brayer, baren, cheap 1/4” brush. I dumped the excess graphite from a previous drawing onto butcher paper, and then put the bristol board face down in the resulting pile and pressed and rolled, then turned it over to brush it.

I’m not fond of New Year’s resolutions, but it happens that some reforms seem to be aligned with the calendar. My current theme is “Back to the Drawing Board.” Still trying to find my artist. The approach now is to play with something I haven’t done, since I seem unable to do the things I once did.

I am disturbed that the country is about to be run by a white man born and raised in South Africa whose formative years were in the heat of the fall of apartheid, and whose emigration took place just before its end. With a mind formed by that, and now affected by unimaginable wealth…

From “God’s Fields”:
“When I learned that Moravians had accepted and practiced racist subjugation, I asked myself, "How did people as good as the Brethren make peace with slavery and racist segregation? How do any of us become involved in practices at odds with their values?”

…All of which, a parallel upbringing within a couple of miles of each other, an interest in Moravian history, and in racism, makes me feel that Leland Ferguson and I have a lot to talk about.
He died in 2023.

It seems very likely from the geography that the Moravian church Leland Ferguson’s family was invited to was either Olivet, where I became the first member of my family to be baptized as a Moravian (by Alan Barnes, for whom I am named), or Mizpah, where overt racism moved us away to Home…
