and it's such an easy fix, man. "LOOKS like the APple don't fall far"

like sorry to pile onto an "acceptable target" (which isn't even what inspired my post, sorry) but a friend sang this at karaoke and it's been on my mind. bad enough in a pop song context but absolutely unforgivable in a musical. I haven't read finishing the hat yet but you definitely should've

more than anything I just get annoyed because I know how easy it is to avoid these things. or cheat! I love to make a cliché or obvious rhyme work by delaying it a little bit into the next stanza, esp one in a new section—you get the satisfaction a different way
December 25, 2025 at 4:41 PM
I mean at least I'm not a hypocrite in the sense that the features of "bad" lyrics that bother me (bad scansion, forced rhyme, &c.) are things I actively avoid in my own work. but me going "ugh that's corny" is like, pot meet kettle

is it just that commonly parodied? my conscious reference points are kops by fear of pop and the driver sf soundtrack but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the fault of cartoons. I'm just curious if there's a specific inflection point

what is this thread
December 6, 2025 at 3:29 PM
it limped along until, predictably, it closed—for the same reason so many restaurants closed. now it's a liquor store with a gas station out front. the sign doesn't match the building. the parking lot is still too big. I don't know what happened to the garden, or the koi

when my mom got her diagnosis, the grandparents moved us into a two-story downwind of the place. at sunset, you could smell fried rice.

we stopped going when our favorite chef quit. the declining food made the 70s decor seem shabby and outmoded instead of charming

my family's go-to was in a theme building that housed both it and a sister restaurant, an american chinese place. its buckhead location meant it was an odd mix of fancy, dated, dubiously japanese touches—scrolls and koi ponds—set way back from the street by a parking lot they couldn't hope to fill

also funny enough I did grow up going to teppanyaki restaurants but never benihana. I don't think I've set foot in one
December 6, 2025 at 3:16 PM
looking at google reviews benihana is primarily known among tokyoites for its curry, which makes sense considering it was originally a kissaten

maybe I'll try the curry for the novelty but for teppanyaki even the lunch is ¥9000〜. I'd have to retroactively become a food critic to justify that
December 6, 2025 at 2:58 PM
anyways I've had a vague plan for a while now to try teppanyaki in japan because I'm so curious how japan's assumptions of american tastes look vs how it was further adapted in america. I'll have to go to misono someday but the nihombashi benihana is also closing around christmas, apparently. hmm
December 6, 2025 at 2:58 PM
wait thread derailed benihana apparently got popular in nyc thanks to a review by clementine paddleford? the same clementine paddleford that supposedly coined the term "hero" for a sub sandwich[citation needed]? and wrote How America Eats? wild
December 6, 2025 at 2:33 PM
usually what happens is that an immigrant cuisine is the result of adaptations to the ingredients and tastes of the area, for practical and survival reasons. but teppanyaki was itself essentially already adapted to american tastes in japan; it was invented to cater to troops during the occupation
