My wife and I are planning a 3 week trip to New Zealand in Sept. Any recommendations on what to see? We will be staying with friends on the North Island, but want to travel to the South Island as well.

My Dad and John Scalzi live in adjoining areas and have acquaintances in common. For my birthday Dad asked for a signed copy of one of John's books.
