Shirley slipped out and was stalking 2 opossums. He is so hard to find in the darkness. I think it's because he's so unwilling. Thank goodness for Temptations treats!
Opossum perched on a limb of a young live oak tree. A flashlight captures the frightened creature trying to hide from a black cat, Shirley. I used Temptations treats to distract him long enough to catch him to bring him inside. I had to hunt Shirley down tonight. He slipped out after dinner. Turns out that he was stalking 2 opossums. He even climbed a tree to get to one! He quickly saw that the opossum was bigger than he was and climbed down pretty fast. But he was still talking smack when I had to carry him inside.

I've been leaving a little kibble along with fresh water and shelter for a feral cat that visits periodically. The opossum took full advantage of the hospitality. It's okay. We all get hungry.

I can't possibly eat or give away all 9 million Christmas cookies I baked this week. I decided to share a few with Tank, a local opossum.

Pecan pie needs to chill before cutting. I don't buy gifts. I bake them.
Freshly baked pecan pie. I used dark corn syrup for a deeper flavor. Still, maybe it spent a little too long in the oven. It's not burned, so it will still be tasty!

A Christmas story.
Once upon a time (back in the early '50's), a hard working man who had been extra busy with a second job to pay for Christmas was trying to unwind with a Scotch on the rocks while the extended family, including all the neices, nephews, and cousins gathered with excitement talking loudly about when Santa would come and who would be getting what. Scotch did not prove to be the magic elixir to calm the hard working man. He would harvest sweet potatoes during the day, and work at the gas/service station in the late afternoon. He did this for weeks and was bone tired. The children's chatter began to get more boisterous, loud, and irritating. The hard working Dad finally had just enough rowdiness from the kids and shouted like a mad man, "The next time I hear ANYBODY get loud and talk about Santa, I'm going to get my gun and shoot Santa and his reindeer clean out of the sky!" Naturally, the kids thought he was serious. He didn't yell much, but when he did, younguns were usually in BIG trouble. But the night was still full of excitement, and the kids forgot to keep it down. Hard workin' Dad simply had enough. He sprung from his chair, grabbed his double barrel shotgun, fired a few shots in the air, and thought, hey, those kids will be quiet now! The kids heard the loud shots and were convinced that hard working Dad had indeed killed Santa and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. There was not a dry eye among the children, and each screamed in horror and grief -- for HOURS! And this, dear readers, is the last time my Aunt Beryl's parents hosted or were invited to any Christmas parties. No one wants to celebrate Christmas with a Santa and reindeer murderer.

I baked an apple pie for a family gathering tomorrow.

I ALMOST used cayenne pepper instead of cinnamon. I'm glad to catch the error in time. Can you imagine?
Apple pie inside the oven as the timer went off. There is no top crust, and the apples are golden brown. Golden brown apple pie fresh from the oven. It smells heavenly!

I'm gonna try to bake Christmas cookies all on my own today. No Worcestershire sauce (it looked like vanilla!) in sight!
The new mixer made this effort possible.

I don't like to bad mouth anyone online, but recently I left a scathing review of a terrible leaf blower. The company saw my review and reached out. They sent me a new, better blower AND a new weed trimmer. I am grateful! But my review is still true. They want to unpublish it.

Christmas cookies! A look back to a previous Christmas cookie decoration extravaganza! These are sugar cookies.
Gingerbread man cookie cutter was used to make the reindeer and badly dressed "dads." A circle shaped cookie is decorated like a pizza. Why be dressed like a gingerbread man when you can be dressed like a man with a certain kind of style? Boy shaped cookie with brown pants, black shoes, sunglasses, and blue and mauve shirt. (My dad dressed this way). 2 cookies of the same shape. A reindeer head and boy shaped cookie.The boy shaped cookie is wearing black framed, thick glasses, a purple and yellow polka dot muscle shirt, bright pink pants and black shoes. Cookie decorated as a pizza. Pizza is imagined with red hots as pepperoni, with mauve pizza sauce, gold cheese, and black olives. This cookie was delicious!

The problem with using MyChart is getting lab results back before the Dr can explain them. My doc is gonna call me tomorrow to explain very bad news, and I just don't know how to handle it.

Tuesday night saw 4 opossums, 3 raccoons, 1 cat, and 1 fox at my back porch. I was able to get photos of some of the animals. This place rocks at night.

I couldn't sleep, so I decided to make an apple pie at midnight. This will be my holiday contribution to the family gathering.

When my semi-feral cat, Shirley, can't cuddle, I have options! This opossum visits my back porch nightly. It is eating off brand cat treats that Shirley refuses to touch.

Making sweet potato casserole for Thanksgiving this week. It will be briefly frozen for travel.

It looked like an enormous amount of sweet potatoes boiling. I don't even like sweet potatoes.

I bought a new vacuum for my b-day. I hate it. I describe it as maliciously compliant. I'm gonna return it. Maybe get a b-day mop instead. Life in the fast lane.
Old Shark vacuum on left. Not perfect, but good cleaner and easy to use. New Shark on right. Like pushing a broken down Buick all over the house. Awful! I hate it. I'm so sad that I hate the vacuum.

Still trying to level last Spring's garden soil. It's slow-going, but I hope to have it in shape for planting this Spring. This soil is so full of weeds and ants, it makes me cry.
Raw dirt in small mounds next to a few trees in the dying light of the late afternoon. It's my vegetable garden spot under maintenance. It's gonna kill me.

My brother came over today and helped me level the overgrown garden spot. Plans are in the works for spring planting. I gave him some Buffalo style hot wings for his trouble. Fair trade.

There is more work to do, but now the mice and snake population so close to the house won't be such an issue. Shirley went hunting on Caturday. He came outside to help me with some gardening but ended up bagging a large mouse. I wouldn't let him bring it inside, so he's pouting.
