In the latest issue of The Sociological Review magazine, you can find this text I wrote. Here I reflect about how when the state doesn’t provide the essentials, the punishment experience relies on women care, and prisoners strategies based on violence, organised rebellion and control.

Hidden sentences: Who fills the gaps in Costa Rica’s failing penitentiary system?
Jesús Bedoya Ureña explores how de facto privatisation of Latin American prisons has led to carceral care economies, violence and inmate governance.

Finished "Hope in the Dark" by @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social tonight, and there is so much in this book (first published over two decades ago and last updated in 2016) that is deeply valuable in the current moment we find ourselves in. Looking forward to reading "No Straight Road Takes You There," too!
