Wonderful read on the souls of animals (and what we mean by "soul")
The Souls of Animals
“They do not sweat and whine about their condition,” Walt Whitman wrote of the other animals, “they do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins, they do not make me sick …

But there are corners on the oldest ships where the dark settles, and not even the brightest light can burn it away…No one who goes into that shadow comes out quite the same. This is the price that is paid to defy the laws of space and time, and jump like thought across the stars.

Hello Sunshine by @keezyyoung.bsky.social is a beautiful, poignant and disturbing story about getting lost and the people close to you trying to find you. Young focuses on what's happening inside her characters, not around them - makes for a very intimate and empathetic narrative. Amazing artwork.

We thought…that if humankind ever devised another intelligence that it would be the result of a huge project…a machine with lots of networking circuits…aping the human brain.
Of course AIs did not evolve that way. They sort of slipped into existence when humans were looking the other way.

Technology implies belligerence…
And if the best toys do end up in the hands of those who’ve never forgotten that life itself is an act of war against intelligent opponents, what does that say about a race whose machines travel between the stars?

She lays traps. She doubles back in time to build dead ends to history; she tangles strands. Her quarry, whose quarry she is in turn, slips free, leaving now a sound, now a taste on the air, nothing so grand s as a thread caught on a thorn.

You pressed your face into the surface of the table, and you closed your eyes so violently that the pressure stung your brows and cheeks. No star hung so still as you did then, at the end of its hard hydrogen burn, breathlessly waiting to slough off its outer layer.
